That's my dad Ron McDougall, flag bearing (for the first and only time!) for the Surfers Paradise SLSC team for the 1947 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships. The carnival was held at Southport and Greenmount beaches and marked the first time the event was held in Queensland.
Dad was secretary of the Surfers clubbies from 1946-51 and as far as we know the oldest living (former) member.
Interestingly, Dad had a stroke in the surf at Alexander Headlands in 2005 and was rescued by an astute clubby who saw him staggering back to the beach. The clubby got him in an ambulance and off to hospital quickly. That early intervention prevented more serious effects.
